A&AePortal contains more than 350 e-books related to the history of art, architecture, decorative arts, photography, and design. Most titles are exclusive to the platform and are published by Yale University Press and other leading university presses (Princeton, Harvard, MIT) and museum publishers (Art Institute of Chicago, National Gallery of Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art). It contains a wide variety of content, including scholarly monographs, museum catalogs, and catalouges raisonnés.

To find royalty-free images using Google, search for your subject. Then click on: Tools => Usage Rights => Creative Commons Licenses

JSTOR
A multidisciplinary digital library that includes all 2,800+ academic journals on JSTOR; spanning more than 60 disciplines across the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. Access also includes more than two million primary source documents.
And, with the incorporation of Artstor's collections, JSTOR is now home to more than two million images.

This page features items from the Library of Congress' (LOC) digital collections that are free to use and reuse. The LOC believes that this content is either in the public domain, has no known copyright, or has been cleared by the copyright owner for public use.
The Met | Open Access Digital Collections
The Metropolitan Museum of Art presents over 5,000 years of art from around the world. Browse their open access/public domain collections.
New York Public Library | Digital Image Collections
Hundreds of thousands of images from the NYPL collections. The materials are labeled with statements that indicate how you may reuse items, and what sort of permission, if any, you need to do so.
Smithsonian Open Access
Here you can download, share, and reuse millions of the Smithsonian’s images. This includes images and data from across the Smithsonian’s 19 museums, nine research centers, libraries, archives, and the National Zoo.
Wikimedia Commons
A collection of freely usable media files to which anyone can contribute.

Can I Use That?

When using materials created by someone else, always make sure you are not infringing on their rights. This page contains a selection of online sites where you can find free-to-use materials for your projects - you should still check for any use restrictions for items you use.

In addition to legal rights, there are also ethical considerations about using other people's work.

Even if it is not required to give attribution to the original creator, it is considered good practice.

Are you sampling from culturally sensitive material?

Norfolk State University, Copyright 101
The Norfolk State University Communications and Marketing Office will provide information about best practices involving copyrighted material, but the decision to use them will be solely on the department making the request. If any University department chooses to use copyrighted materials, they will be responsible for any fines or legal consequences should the owner of these materials choose to sue the university for copyright infringement.
