Building a Search String in WorldCat Discovery

Searching in WorldCat Discovery supports the use of advanced syntax and commands. By inserting specific phrases, operators, and syntax into your searches, you can focus your results and even limit them to individual collections within the library.

The key to searching only within the Children's Library collection is using the following element in you search: (b8:children)

This element sends a command to WorldCat Discovery that it should only deliver results for books in the library that are located in a physical collection at the library which includes the word "children" in the label:

  • b8: - this is the index label for location and the syntax that says the location label must include the next word.
  • children - this is the word that must exist in the collection label.
  • ( ) - these parentheses allow you to include other search terms to further limit your results.

Here are some examples of searches using the Children's Library location limiter:

  • (b8:children)
    • Returns results for all books within the Children's Library collection.
  • Newbery AND (b8:children)
    • Returns results for books within the Children's Library collection that include the keyword Newbery, which will occur in any book that has been labelled as being a Newbery award honor book or award winner.
  • Caldecott AND (b8:children)
    • Returns results for books within the Children's Library collection that include the keyword Caldecott, which will occur in any book that has been labelled as being a Caldecott award honor book or award winner.
