ENG 101: College English I

This course guide accompanies the in-person library instruction for ENG 101 and serves as a reference point for topics and resources described in the class.

Kanopy

Searching in Kanopy is not as robust as many of the text-based databases in the library, but it does offer some features to pre-format your search beyond simple keyword searching.

Basic Search:

By default, you can type any keyword or phrase into the search box, similar to the basic search function in Netflix and other video streaming services. From the results list, you can filter by suggested categories or facets such as genre and language as well as whether a title includes Public Performance Rights (PPR).

Advanced Search:

If you would like to narrow your search results or search for exact titles, you can use some of the following advanced features:

  • Exact title / phrase: By surrounding your search term(s) in quotes, you will only get results with that exact phrase: "Ex Libris: The New York Public Library"

Formatted exact phrase search using quotation marks around a title.

  • Boolean Operator AND: use AND to return search results that must contain both of your search terms; if a video does not have both terms, it will not show up in your results. Example: using "Hamilton AND Miranda" when searching for content on Hamilton the musical will return fewer results that are more accurate to the topic than just searching Hamilton, which will include any videos with the word Hamilton.
    • The platform states support for the Boolean operator NOT and wildcard searching using * in its documentation, but, in testing by librarians at NSU, these functions have not worked well and alternative filtering or search structuring should be used. (functionality tested March 2023)

Formatted search using Boolean operator AND.

Basic video playback in Kanopy is similar to other streaming video resources, but it includes several helpful tools such as transcripts, closed captioning, and Picture-in-Picture viewing:

Transcripts:

  • When the video transcript button is selected, a full transcript of the video will launch on the right side of the screen including dialog and timestamps. The transcript will advance along with video playback.
  • Transcripts can be very helpful for locating specific section of the video and for making accurate notes of video content.
  • Note: video transcripts do no synchronize with clipped video; if you have made a clip of a video, the transcript will still launch for the entire full-length video and will not keep time in the clip.

Closed Captioning:

  • When the closed captions button is selected, the user is given the option to select the language for the captions (if more than one is available) and the toggle at the top of the box must be switched to "on" for the captions to be active.

Picture-in-Picture:

  • Picture-in-Picture mode will display your video in a small floating box that you can have displayed over other webpages. This mode allows you to visit other pages while still having your video playing in a miniaturized format to assist in multi-tasking.

Note: you can browse and watch videos in Kanopy without creating an individual account. Additional features, such as Custom Playlists and Watchlist, are only available with an individual account and you can set one up for free by clicking the profile icon in the upper right corner of the Kanopy homepage.

Kanopy offers additional features, Custom Playlist and Watchlist, that you will need to to make an account to use.

To create an account, open Kanopy from the A-Z Databases list, click the profile icon in the upper right hand corner of the page, and follow the prompts.

Custom Playlist:

  • The custom playlist function can be used to make clips of other videos. You can also use this feature to clip multiple videos and string them together into one continuous video.
  • There are many ways to use this function including saving important sections of a video for reference, linking multiple scenes together to help with analysis, and enhancing presentations with custom video.
